CITY OF NIGHT(S)

November dawns as we simultaneously reel from a terrorist tragedy and celebrate the end of the repressive Cabaret Laws, all within an hour yesterday afternoon. Kudos must go to the entire Night City as they came out for Halloween with a vengeance and showed the world once again just what we New Yorkers are made of. If you are as shell-shocked as we’ve been, come out and see the JACKIE 60 family Friday night for what promises to be a fabulous second edition of FIRED UP. Last month they were dancing from one end of CLUB CUMMING to the other, this month its even legal!

FIRED UP!

Johnny Dynell Spins the Gay Nineties
Friday, November 3

Johnny returns to hit East Village boite CLUB CUMMING for the second monthly edition of his 90s house homage FIRED UP! This month he welcomes “Voice of the 90s” PAUL ALEXANDER to perform several of his dance floor classics at 1 AM including WALK (PAUL’S GROOVE), THE JACKIE HUSTLE (the JACKIE 60 anthem) and GIMME LUV. Last month’s opening was dancey and joyous, and we hope you’ll join us this Friday for Part 2.

House Music was born in Chicago in the mid Eighties and brought to NY by WAREHOUSE DJ FRANKIE KNUCKLES to LARRY LEVAN’S DJ booth at the mythic PARADISE GARAGE. JOHNNY DYNELL, spinning Fridays and Saturdays at THE TUNNEL, helped introduce this new sound in 1986, and brought his own brand of it to the newborn Jackie 60 four years later. Now he returns to this signature Dynell early Nineties soundtrack for FIRED UP! For a sample of this sound listen to Johnny’s “THAT JACKIE FEELING” podcast on his Soundcloud page.

EDIT DeAk SUPER 8 FILM

THE Museum of Modern Art
Thursday, November 16

Johnny spins live for this presentation of the seminal Super 8 films of EDIT DeAk, a longtime friend and early artistic mentor. Edit was a force in the Mudd Club era art world, and had already been one for years as a writer and publisher. The films were created and shown at her Wooster Street loft in the late Seventies – a crash pad for young geniuses and the dissolute – with friends like RAMMELLZEE, FAB FIVE FREDDY and JAMES NARES often in attendance. At these impromptu screenings, Johnny improvised the musical soundtracks. Each film documented one person/performance, designer MIGUEL OSUNA as JAMES BOND for example, or No Wave starlet LISA ROSEN as JACKIE KENNEDY.

DeAk had been working for a long time on a modern presentation of the films, edited together into an improvisational pastiche. After her recent death, there was a new impetus to finish the project, which she had asked Dynell to score. He will DJ for this screening at MOMA as part of the CLUB 57 screenings and performances and then appear for a discussion of the filmmaker with show co-organizer PATRICK FOX. Dynell will also create the soundtrack for these films as part of the Museum’s permanent collection.
